LEGO has revealed the latest iteration of its programmable robotic construction kit Mindstorms at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Mindstorms, first released in 1998, is designed to make robotics accessible for kids and adults.

Previously programmed with a PC, the next generation Mindstorms EV3 kit has added iOS and Android support.

The $350 set has 594 blocks and can make five different robots, including Gripp3r, a mech-style robot which travels on tracks and Spid3r, a spider-like robot which fires small ball projectiles. Instructions to make an additional 12 robots will be released at launch.

The kit has simple programming software and LEGO reckons anyone can get a working robot up and running in 20 minutes.
